Best In Show
In my on-going series, Best in Show, I confront the unsettling tradition of the commodification and objectification of women. The artwork focuses on a group of women, reduced to their legs and genitals or naked torso, exhibited at a fictitious 'Woman Show.' Each woman is attached to a leash held by their male owners, symbolizing the oppressive patriarchal society that seeks to control and dominate them. They are judged solely based on their physical traits, with their heads and arms intentionally obscured, emphasizing their reduction to mere body parts for sexual objectification.
The men in the scene, depicted in grayscale and wearing black suits, represent the establishment and the perpetuation of patriarchal norms. Like the women, their heads are not included, indicating their conformity to societal expectations and roles within the oppressive system. They are trapped, playing their assigned roles, either directly benefiting from the patriarchal system or remaining complicit in its reinforcement. One woman stands out as pregnant, drawing attention to the societal perception that a woman's body is often solely valued for its reproductive capabilities. This representation serves as a poignant commentary on how women's worth is sometimes limited to their ability to bear children, reinforcing the objectification and control of their bodies. The women are painted in red or yellow scales, giving them warmth and vitality, yet their color spectrum remains one-dimensional, emphasizing their objectified existence within the societal construct.
Through this collection, I aim to provoke contemplation and foster critical conversations about the disturbing practice of objectifying and commodifying women within patriarchal societies.
Each woman represents a collective experience, symbolizing the systemic oppression women face. By shedding light on these power dynamics, I invite viewers to reflect on their roles in perpetuating or challenging these structures and strive for a more egalitarian and liberating society for all.
